It varies depending on what time and when you go. You usually should not have to wait if you’re early. Friday evenings and weekend evenings are usually more packed.
I’ve eaten many a times at Tonkatsu by Ma Masion. It’s definitely one of the better Tonkatsu places in Singapore. Today I’m just reviewing their Miso Special. I personally like the original pork better than the kurobuta pork for tonkatsu, for this restaurant. I find that the original is more flavourful than the kurobuta and juicier! I usually go for Hire Katsu, which is what I got here. The tonkatsu is nothing to complain about, the pork is succulent and juicy, crispy on the outside and pack full of flavour on the inside. I am however not a fan of the sauce, it is a little too sweet for my liking! I do generally prefer savoury foods so that might play into the subjective opinion.
The sauce is sweet, but you do get a strong miso taste. It tastes a little bit like the Korean Doubanjiang but slightly sweeter.
What I truly love about Tonkatsu by Ma Maison is its Tonjiru. (For those of you who don’t know, Tonjiru is like miso soup but cook and stewed with more items like root vegetables and pork.) I love the fact that Tonkatsu by Ma Maison serves Tonjiru instead of Miso soup. I find that a lot of Japanese restaurants in Singapore that serves Miso Soup, serves it almost diluted with a lot of water making it very underwhelming, but serving Tonjiru almost guarantees that the soup you’re drinking is going to be packed full of flavours! Ma Maison’s Tonjiru is exactly that; it has an intense Miso flavour with a hint of sweetness from the vegetables, but it finds the right balance, making it very enjoyable for someone who enjoys strong flavours.
This is a dish one should try for the curiosity’s sake, and for those who has never been to Nagoya or is unlikely to ever go.
*This is a set dish. It comes with tonjiru soup and a choice of either white or brown rice.
I would return to Tonkatsu by Ma Maison, but certainly not for the Miso Tonkatsu!
